![]() The opening is a fast, crowded rip through the desert of the American west. Project CARS 3 drops you right into a race from the very beginning. I don’t know, it’s hard to explain why a gruelling hour or so that ended in essentially failure-against a bot, no less-was so satisfying, but it was.īut, anyway, that’s the past. I had a two or three second lead, until I blew it on the final corner, getting a little hot on the throttle and finding myself in the rail and having to limp across the finish in something like fourth.Īnd yet… it was epic. One of the favourite races I’ve done in any racing turned out to be one against the AI, 40 laps of the historic Monza, with the oval, in a Lotus 72. Completing a long endurance race was something special. That meant it was a punishing game, but also a rewarding one. It was a serious racing game for serious racers. ![]() The series was first developed with a community-based model, raising money from the public, and putting it in the hands of players in pre-alpha testing. I don’t think the Project CARS series was ever the most popular sim racer out there but it took racing seriously on PC and console. The game had something of a niche already. I don’t want to dwell too much on this, because if you’ve read another review of PC3 this will have come up, but the radical shift in focus and style is a jarring one. More Need for Speed, than 3-monitor sim racer, it’s a game that seems aimed squarely at the casual racer. Those were the old games, this is the new game. Project CARS the Third has no such pretensions. Historic tracks, race cars of all different classes, a sort of mix of nostalgia and excitement. It sets itself apart, because the last iteration of the weirdly named series-that would be Project CARS 2-is a game firmly rooted in the idea of motorsport simulation. The opening video starts with a Mercedes winding its way down a mountain road, drifting around corners, until a Honda - waiting around a blind curve -darts out to join the chase. To all but the most serious of series fans, these are minor annoyances, not deal-breakers, and while they are worth mentioning, they're nothing that should sway serious racing fans from taking Project Cars 3 for a spin.Right off the bat, Project CARS 3 sets itself apart from its predecessors. Also, some of the text in the menus is hard to read if, like a good gamer, you sit a reasonable distance from your screen. Hard-core fans of this series will also lament how you can't run out of gas or have your tires wear out, and thus don't have to make pit stops (though, to some people, this is a blessing, not a curse). There are deeper racing games out there, ones with more events (though some would argue, too many). That's not to say that this racer is flawless, because it's hardly that. You have to earn that first-place finish. More importantly, your competition when you play against the computer is actually competitive, and won't just let you win no matter what difficulty setting you've chosen. Not only does it have options that can make it feel like a simulation or an arcade-esque game, and all points in between, but it also has a similarly wide variety of race types, tracks, and cars. ![]() Like it's competition, Project Cars 3 is a full-service racing game. Thanks to solid controls and twisty tracks, but some poor design choices, this is a flawed but fun racing game.
